Should You Design Your Own Bathroom
Yes, you should design your own bathroom, at least to the rough draft stage. You can start your bathroom design project with some facts and graph paper, or there is software available that you could use to make your design easier.
If you are simply remodeling the same space your bathroom currently occupies then measure that bathroom space. If you are planning on replacing anything that is affixed to wallspace, then you need to measure walls as well. Don't forget to figure in any windows or doors.
Use your graph paper and a ruler and make a sketch. Or it might be sketches, if your bathroom design includes changes that influence wall space. Next to your sketch list and identify your measurements. If you are going to incorporate new space gained by expanding into an existing closet or other space that will have to be factored in as well.
If you have gotten this far, you are most likely serious about a bathroom remodel and probably have some major changes in mind. Begin making a record of the things you want to change, or add and the fixtures and materials you will need.
If you are planning to re-arrange fixtures, even in your existing space, then you will need a before and a projected after graphical sketch. If you keep plumbing hookups where they are it will reduce plumbing costs, but this is not always possible.
Sometime re-arranging even a small bathroom is worth the additional expense if it makes the space more functional. But you do need an additional sketch showing changes and accounting for any plumbing changes.
Gather pictures and ideas that reflect what you want in your new bathroom. There is a lot of information online. Also gather product brochures, and do some research. Gather samples of materials whenever possible.
Caution: When you are selecting materials, don't rely on the glib advice of sales people about care and maintenance. Consider a purchase on their comments, but before you finalize the sale get backup information distributed by the manufacturer. Ther e are many good sales people, and there are also some who operate with limited information and could steer you wrong.
Even if you plan to contract this whole bathroom remodel out, starting with at least a rough design will come in handy. If you are dealing with a contractor it will better enable you to get across to him what you want. And it will also help you in the decision making process.
A bathroom remodel is a relatively expensive project. Making sure everything will fit is a good thing when you are dealing with a project this size. You will probably do some or all of the shopping. Having the information that you have included in your bathroom design will help with the shopping process. Make a copy and take it along.
By participating in the design process of your bathroom you are more likely to have a pleasant outcome. You will be living with this bathroom for many years to come, and you will be glad you put some effort into it's design.
